Installation/use :

Version 1.x (external .net window, compatible with Windows XP, Vista/DP 1.0, 2.0)

- Fingerfox is published as a .xpi file and can be installed like any other extension for Firefox (you can use drag and drop with the .xpi file you downloaded to the Firefox window then confirm for instance). Nevertheless, to solve compatibility issues with Windows Vista/DigitalPersona 2.0, the extension works now with an external popup developped with Visual Studio 2005. You have nothing special to do to install this externall app, it is included in the .xpi and installed automatically. But please note that this app requires MS .net Framework 2.0 (cliquez ici). If you don't want to install it, unfortunately you must go back to the 0.x version.

- Once Fingerfox is installed (and after the restart of Firefox), you should see the Fingerfox icon the bottom right of the window in the status bar (for version 1.1 and inferior) or a Fingerfox Menu right clicking anywhere in the webpage:

- If you see fingerfox in the status bar the extension is correctly installed.

- Let's try Fingerfox : open a webpage where you want to use the MS Fingerprint reader to login.

- Load a page that you want to use the fingerprint reader to log into. Once the page is loaded click on the Fingerfox icon in the status bar (or hit ALT+X) to open the Fingerfox window. The Fingerfox window should have login fields matching the webpage (example: Username and Password fields) as shown above :

The fields on the web page

The same fields on the Fingerfox window

- Some people like to see the window clearly, some other not :). So now you can adjust the opacity level using the mouse wheel on the window or clicking on it (out of a text field or a button) to reset to an opaque value. This opacity value is remembered for the next Fingerfox session.

Same window, more discrete

- Now that the Fingerfox window has the focus, you have to teach DigitalPersona how to fill it in automatically. Go ahead like you do normally with a login window. Press your finger on the Fingerprint Reader.

- DigitalPersona can read the Fingerfox window, its text and password fields as well as its buttons. Please not that for each login form of the web page, Fingerfox will automatically add a button called name_of_the_form.submit() though it is not present on the webpage (it just triggers the submit() method with the form). As a result, you have the choice to send you form between the button showed on the web page (type 'submit' or the equivalent 'image') and the default button we talked about just before, calling the submit() method. It's recommended to use the latter only if you have problems with the 'submit' or 'image' button, as for most login forms, using the submit() method won't work (email me if you want further information).

- You can now fill in the fields in the DigitalPersona window (you'll do it once only) then choose the button with which the form will be sent among the buttons shown in the Fingerfox window.

- Then, you can log in on the website with your Fingerprint Reader as you used to do with IE, once the Fingerfox window is shown.

- At this step, DigitalPersona is configured to automatically fill in the form of the website using Fingerfox. You now have the choice between an automatic or manual popup. With the first option, if the website you visit and its login form match the one you setup with Fingerfox to login, the Fingerfox window opens automatically. With manual mode, you will need to open the fingerfox window (clicking on the status bar or pressing ALT+X). To activate the automatic popup option, you just have to click on the Automatic Popup checkbox shown in the popup menu (right click the status bar icon). Fingerfox will remember that choice.

- Note : it is really recommanded not to use the main password in Firefox and not to save automatically the login information using Firefox to let Fingerfox work properly. Indeed, the Firefox login window appear each time you visit a website with a login form and it may disturb you.

Version 0.x (mozilla XUL window, compatible with Windows XP/DP 1.0 only)

- Fingerfox is published as a .xpi file and can be installed like any other extension for Firefox (you can use drag and drop with the .xpi file you downloaded to the Firefox window then confirm for instance).

- Once Fingerfox is installed (and after the restart of Firefox), you should see a 'Fingerfox' caption at the bottom right of the window in the status bar :

- If you see fingerfox in the status bar the extension is correctly installed.

- Load a page that you want to use the fingerprint reader to log into. Once the page is loaded click 'Fingerfox' on the status bar (or hit ALT+X) to open the Fingerfox window.
